Hi All,
Micro moth books do seem to be an expensive bit of kit. Is there such a thing as secondhand bookshops who could answer all our needs? What does happen when the moffer finally hangs up their light traps?

Carol - see my post elsewhere, but yes of course these things do turn up secondhand from time to time but tracking them down can be difficult. Ebay and Amazon sometimes offer reasonable value, but that's rare. To be honest, given where you are, I think I'd concentrate on the macros and use the web and this forum to get to grips with micros. You'll then be in a better position to decide which specialised texts you'll need.

Mike,
Thanks for the sensible advice. But I wanted to avoid swamping the ident. section of this place with what are probally very simple to identify ones, people may get cheesed off! However you are quite right the world of macros is a big enough area. As always with me the well known phraase springs to mind, something to do with before, and walking and running and being able to.

When I said 'where you are', I meant part of the world, not 'where you are' in your journey into moths, although there is something to be said for not running before you are walking competently! The French moth list is around 6000 species (off top of me head), some two times greater than the impoverished fauna of the British Isles. The macros are decently covered by Robineau and Leraut, but there are no cheap one-stop-shops for continental micros, and using a British guide will have a greater potential for misidentification. This risk gets larger as one travels south towards the Mediterranean, where the fauna is considerably different. Still, if you lived in Spain or Italy it would be even worse (and even worse in eastern Europe, where species new to science, let alone Europe, are still being discovered).
Anyway, why shouldn't you post simple ones? You wouldn't be the first one...just try not to post the same thing night after night!
