I have been moth trapping for about 2 months now. I live just south of Newmarket next to a wonderful stretch of bridleway that has lots of nice woodland and hedgerow trees. We are surrounded by paddocks so it is quite an interesting environment for both birds and moths. I have enjoyed reading the posts on this site. Lots of useful info.

Other interests include mountains, Arctic, Nordic skiing and Cycle touring.

Like other members I thought I'd drop in and say hi. I live in South Wales and am new to the world of moths. I have access to a new reserve and have been doing some species recording. I started off with Butterflies and Flowering plants and am beginning to get a bit more confident and knowledgeable, However, I can no longer ignore the world of moths as this new reserve seems to have an enormous amount of them. So I'm a total beginner and will be sumitting lots of ID requests. Many thanks in advance :)

Hi everybody,
Please excuse me if I have started in the wrong "box", but I am asking a favour. If anybody around the Plymouth area is thinking of putting out a moth trap and they would not mind some company then please could I join them. I have not got a moth trap and would not know about how to make one and when or where to put one.
In anticipation, thanks to you all.

Hello

My name is Emma and as part of my Geography degree I'm looking into the effectiveness of the UK's agricultural stewardship schemes. As well as looking at the biodiversity of the grasslands and waterways I have decided to look at moth populations.

I am using a trap my boyfriend made for his dad a few years ago using an actinic setup from Paul Batty.

The trap has been out at a few sites over the last few nights and I have caught a good number of moths many of which I have identified include; Large Yellow Underwing, Canary Shouldered Thorn, Brimestone, Magpie, Broom and Rosy Footman.

The trouble I'm having is identifying the remaning moths, I have been using this site, ukmoths.org.uk, and several books but don't really know how to start identifying them, so any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Emma

i found this website by putting gooden moth trap into google. i've been messing about with this trap for a couple of years. the design is very poor - i could never get it to stand up and eventually had to suspend it from a branch. i probably used it a dozen times in midsummer in an area with no light pollution catching around 10 moths in total. the light is no longer working and i was considering buying a new unit but fortunately i read other members comments. i have come to the conclusion that it is not just overpriced but not worth buying for any money cause it doesn't work ! i am going to buy an actinic from paul batty [ editor of elg ] and will take the remnants of my gooden trap to the nearest civic amenity centre.

Seeing as Ive been posting here for a month or two I figured it would be polite to introduce myself.

My name is Stuart Williams I am a 39 and a keen wildlife enthusiast. I have only been "mothing" a few months and the learning curve is steep, but hopefully I wont get on too many peoples nerves with my constant asking for help with ID's.

I use a home made "robinson" type trap along with a 26W energy saving UV bulb(keep the neighbours happy). I am finding this forum a great help with ideas and guides and hopefully as I become more knowledgeable I can contribute a few of my own ideas and findings.

I am gunna stop now before this becomes a "War and Peace" size post:)

thanx for Reading

I have recently rejoined the community after a couple of years absence, I have been catching moths for about eight years using many differant ways (ie) lit window, sugaring, dusking, and beating. In 2009 I built my own trap which has been very successful, I have used 3 types of bulb, a 25w ultra-violet low energy, a 100w tungsten mercury blended & a 160w eye self ballasred mercury lamp, all have been good at attracting moths but the best by far is the 25w ultra-violet. I photograph all the interesting moths and have posted a few on my profile page, regards Moffer

Hi, I'm new to Moths, so please bare with me, but have been a keen birder all my life, so I know a thing or two about other aspects of nature, and have seen many of the UKS butterflies over the years (including some fantastic Monarchs whilst in Cornwall and the isles of Scilly). I'm from Milton Keynes, so if anyone knows of anything mothy in the area please let me know

I'm about to build my first moth trap (with the help of my electric able brother in law), so will no doubt have a number of IDs etc for you all soon ;)

I have a plethora of questions to ask, but will try to target them around the correct forums (I have already done some searching before becoming a member).

Anyway, hope you are all well

Ash.

Hi,
I am a retired biomedical scientist living in Lincolnshire. I've had an interest in birdwatching for much of my life but since retiring I have started wildlife photography and have recently developed an interest in invertebrates. I enjoy wandering the countryside photographing all and sundry but am having particular difficulty in identifying moths. I shall be posting a few photos now and again to see if anyone can give me a clue on IDs.
King Regards
